Happy Bisexuality Day! Support the colors of the pink, purple and blue. Of course, this day means a lot to me because I am bisexual. We bisexuals are really misunderstood. The heterosexuals and homosexuals tend to treat us badly. To the homosexual community we always have to prove our “gayness” when we are with a partner of the opposite sex. I know in PRIDE parades sometimes bisexuals who bring partners from the opposite sex get harassed by gays and lesbians. We are looked as “just a phase” before going back to being straight or we’re “in transition” before becoming gay. It is a case for some people, but not all. It does not mean people have the right to be dismissive on the sexuality.
There is also this notion that bisexuals must have a boyfriend AND a girlfriend. LONG EXASPERATING SIGH. Look there are two types of relationships. They are monogamous and polyamorous. Polyamorous are people who have an open relationship with multiple people. Monogamous are people who prefer being in a relationship with one person. Not every bisexual wants to be in polyamorous relationship. Some do and some don’t. It’s the same with heterosexuals. There some that are in a poly relationship and some in monogamous. Yet, we do not label heterosexuals as polyamorous beings. So why do so to bisexuals.
I, myself, am a monogamous bisexual. People would be confused when I say this and think it’s not possible. As a monogamous bisexual, I like to be with just one special person. I focus more on the person’s personality and value than their gender. As a homosexual and heterosexual, the number one thing you are looking in a partner is the gender. Everything else follows. It’s vice versa for someone who is a monogamous bisexual (and maybe monogamous pansexual).
But enough of me ranting. Besides the constant misconceptions of bisexuals, I love being bisexual and the community. Show love and support to all the bisexuals by adulting one day at a time.
